Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Julia Brannan · 2018 · exile

Julia Brannan's sixth and final Jacobite Chronicles novel. Alex MacGregor, believing his wife survived Culloden, comes south out of the Highlands to find her. The Duke of Newcastle, unable to have Beth killed without offending people he cannot afford to offend, has her transported to Antigua instead - to a sugar plantation expected to finish the job for him.

  1. 1
    Loch Lomond

In the MacGregor country after Culloden, with the clan scattered and the glens burned, Alex learns that Beth may be alive - and sets out south into a kingdom where his face is worth money and his name is proscribed.

  2. 2
    London

In London the Duke of Newcastle finds he cannot dispose of Beth quietly - too many powerful people know her name - so he chooses transportation instead, and lets the climate and the cane fields do it for him.

  3. 3
    The Atlantic

The convict ship crosses in conditions designed to reduce the number who arrive, and Beth makes the passage among women sent to the islands for far smaller offences - and does not die, which was not the plan.

  4. 4
    Antigua

On Antigua she is put to the sugar, in a colony where indenture and slavery differ mainly in paperwork - and takes a decision about her own survival whose consequences reach all the way back to the man searching for her.
