Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

James Cameron · 1997 · sea

James Cameron's 1997 epic. The largest ship in the world leaves Southampton for New York, calling at Cherbourg and Queenstown before turning out into the North Atlantic. Aboard her, a first-class passenger and a steerage artist fall in love across the barrier of class - four days before the iceberg, and the fifteen hundred deaths that follow.

  1. 1
    Southampton

On 10 April 1912 the Titanic casts off from Southampton - and among those coming aboard are Rose DeWitt Bukater, sailing to a marriage she does not want, and Jack Dawson, who has won his ticket at cards.

  2. 2
    Cherbourg

She anchors that evening off Cherbourg to take on passengers ferried out by tender, among them the wealthy and the hopeful of the Continent, before turning west into the Channel for the Irish coast.

  3. 3
    Queenstown

At Queenstown in County Cork the last passengers board and the last mail comes aboard, and the Titanic stands out into the open Atlantic - the coast of Ireland the final land anyone aboard will see.

  4. 4
    The wreck site

Four days out, at forty-one north and fifty west, she strikes ice and goes down in two hours and forty minutes with fifteen hundred aboard - and eighty-four years later a submersible descends to the wreck to hear the story told.
