Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Bernard Cornwell · 2002 · overland

Bernard Cornwell's 2002 novel, second of the Grail Quest. Thomas of Hookton is sent north to hunt for the Grail and finds himself instead in the shield wall at Neville's Cross, where a Scottish army is broken outside Durham. The search then carries him back to Brittany and the war in France, pursued by an Inquisitor and by cousins who want the relic for themselves.

  1. 1
    Durham

Sent north on the Grail business, Thomas is caught up in the Scottish invasion of 1346 and fights at Neville's Cross outside Durham - a battle won by archers against a larger army, and ending with a king taken prisoner.

  2. 2
    La Roche-Derrien

The search takes him back across the Channel to the English garrison at La Roche-Derrien in Brittany, a town of shifting loyalties in a war of sieges and raids, where his enemies know exactly where to find him.

  3. 3
    Calais

The English army sits before Calais through a winter-long siege, and the threads of the Grail hunt, the Inquisition and Thomas's own poisonous family are drawn together in the camps outside the walls.
