Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Diana Gabaldon · 1994 · sea

Twenty years apart. Jamie survives the moor and loses everything by degrees: the cave, the prison, a stranger's bed in an English stable yard, a son he can never name. Claire raises their daughter in Boston. When Roger Wakefield finds proof that Jamie lived, she goes back through the stones at forty-eight and up the stairs of a printshop in Edinburgh - and the two of them fall out of Scotland altogether, chasing a kidnapped boy to the West Indies.

  1. 1
    Culloden

Jamie wakes among the dead with a broken nose and a leg that will not work, and is carried to a farmhouse where the English shoot the wounded one by one. When his turn comes, Lord Melton hears his name - the man who spared his brother at Prestonpans - and sends him home instead.

  2. 2
    Lallybroch

Seven years in a cave above his own land as the Dunbonnet, coming down once a month to see his family and endanger them. In the end he arranges his own capture so that his tenants can claim the reward and eat.

  3. 3
    Ardsmuir

The prison in the far north, where he is Mac Dubh to the men and chief of them - and where the new governor turns out to be Lord John Grey, the boy he spared at Prestonpans, grown up and helplessly in love with him.

  4. 4
    Helwater

When the prisoners are transported to the colonies, Grey has Jamie paroled to an English stud farm in the Lake District instead. Here Geneva Dunsany blackmails him into her bed and dies bearing his son, and Jamie stays on as a groom to watch William grow until the boy's face begins to give them both away.

  5. 5
    Lallybroch

Pardoned at last in 1764 and home - to a family that has learned to live without him, and to a second marriage that is nobody's idea of a good one.

  6. 6
    Boston

Two hundred years and an ocean away, Claire has been raising his daughter, burying Frank and becoming a surgeon. She has not said Jamie's name aloud in twenty years.

  7. 7
    Inverness

Roger Wakefield finds Jamie's name on a list of prisoners taken to Ardsmuir - alive, years after Culloden. Claire has to choose between the daughter she raised and the man she left, and it is Brianna who makes her go.

  8. 8
    Craigh na Dun

The stones again, at forty-eight, with a doctor's bag and photographs of a daughter he has never met.

  9. 9
    Edinburgh

    A. Malcolm, printer, Carfax Close. She walks up the stairs and says his name and he faints on the floor of his own shop. Twenty years, and the first thing he asks about is the baby.

  10. 10
    Lallybroch

Home, and the discovery of Laoghaire - the girl who once had Claire tried as a witch, and who is now Jamie's wife. Claire walks out; Laoghaire shoots him; Claire comes back with penicillin.

  11. 11
    Arbroath

The smuggling coast, and Jamie's real trade. The ambush goes wrong, and out on a rock in the sea Young Ian is carried off by pirates who came for the Frenchman's gold.

  12. 12
    Jamaica

They take the Artemis across the Atlantic after the boy and find the West Indies waiting: Geillis Duncan alive and rich at Rose Hall, the Governor's ball, and a reckoning two centuries in the making.

  13. 13
    Georgia

Running from the Royal Navy, the Artemis is caught by a hurricane and thrown six hundred miles onto the American shore. They crawl out of the surf half-drowned into a country neither has ever seen, and it is the last place either of them will call home.
