Ingmar Bergman · 1957 · road
Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film. An elderly professor drives from Stockholm to Lund to receive an honorary degree, accompanied by his daughter-in-law and, along the way, three hitchhikers. The journey keeps stopping at places from his own life, and by the time he reaches the ceremony he has been shown, fairly comprehensively, what his coldness cost.
- 1Stockholm
Isak Borg, seventy-eight and honoured by everyone who does not have to live with him, sets out by car rather than by air - and begins the day with a dream of a hearse, a clock with no hands and his own body in the coffin.
- 2Lund
He arrives at Lund for the jubilee doctorate having stopped at his childhood summer house, quarrelled, listened and been made to see himself - and the honour is the least significant thing that happens that day.
